What is Gastric Banding?
Laparoscopic Adjustable Gastric Banding Surgery is the most widely performed weight-loss procedure in the world. The Lap-Band has proven highly effective in producing long term weight loss, less invasive and more easily reversible than gastric bypass surgery, adjustable and simpler - requiring only a "same-day" or Outpatient surgery stay and short recovery time.
During this procedure, a bariatric surgeon utilizes laparoscopic tools and through several small incisions in the abdomen places a soft adjustable band around the upper part of the patient's stomach. This restricted area of the stomach becomes a pouch that decreases hunger and can only hold a small amount of food, thus promoting weight loss in the patient. A plastic tube connects this band to a small port device just under the patient's skin. This port device is where the band can be quickly adjusted on routine follow up visits right in the doctor's office. The adjustability of the band allows for the patient to lose weight at a safe and effective pace throughout their weight loss journey.
Gastric Banding is Safe
Gastric banding procedures are considered by many to be the least invasive type of weight loss surgery. The procedures are reversable and have a low complication rate.
Unlike some other types of weight loss surgery, gastric banding does not interfere with the body's capability to absorb nutrients, thus patient rarely have to worry about vitamin deficiences as a result of the weight loss surgery.
